How to turn an email into a task

When an email asks for something (an issue or a request), Inbox doesn't create the task on its own: it proposes it, and you decide.

How to tell if an email has a proposed task

In the list, those emails carry a badge, with the tooltip "This email has a proposed task". When you open one, below the message you'll see the Proposed task card, with a label showing whether it's a Request or an Issue · urgent.

The proposal is generated by the AI when it processes the email, so it doesn't appear for types marked as "no AI". You also need the Tasks section set up in your account.

Accept or discard

  1. Review the card's title. It's editable: change it if you need to.
  2. If you know the date, add it in the Date field (optional).
  3. Click Accept and create task to create it, or Discard to ignore it without creating anything.

When you accept it, the task is created with its priority and with the contact's project, and the email is linked to it. The card shows "Task created from this email." and the View the task → link.

Notify the sender

Once the task is created, emails show the Notify the sender button. The AI writes a short message, in the language of the original email, confirming that their request is registered, with the task's title and the expected date.

  1. Click Notify the sender.
  2. Review and, if you want, edit the text.
  3. Click Send notice.

You can only notify once per task: afterwards you'll see "You have already notified the sender about this task."

Another option: create a note

If what you want is to keep the email's content rather than create a task, use the Create a note with this email's content icon.

Tip: if a proposal doesn't make sense, discard it. No harm done: the email stays in your inbox like any other.
