Publishing long YouTube videos by hand (and automatic Shorts)

In WorkOS, YouTube works in two ways:

  • Shorts (automatic). With the «Where it is published» value YouTube, the video (MP4) is published on your channel through the YouTube connection, like any other social network.
  • Long video (manual). With the YouTube (long video) channel, WorkOS publishes nothing: it is a record to keep you organised. You upload the video to YouTube yourself and here you keep its title, full description, thumbnail and date so it shows in the calendar.

Turning it on

Your administrator turns it on in the Publications settings: create the option «YouTube (long video)» in «Where it is published» and pick it under «Where it is published» → YouTube (long video). To keep the thumbnail, also assign the YouTube thumbnail property (a files property).

Creating a long video

Press + in Publications, choose YouTube (long video), write the title and, if you wish, the date and the description. It cannot be created by voice and does not ask for an attachment: the video is not uploaded to WorkOS.

What you can keep in the record

  • YouTube title (100 characters at most). If left empty, the publication title is used.
  • Full description, in the Post tab, with formatting and no length limit.
  • Thumbnail, in its own tab (images only).
  • Date and, once you publish it on YouTube, the Completed status and the video external URL.

Statuses

Move the publication to Scheduled to see it in the calendar and to Completed once it is uploaded to YouTube. The Publishing status does nothing with this channel.

Customising the Shorts value

To leave «YouTube» free for long videos, your administrator can change the Shorts value to, for example, «YouTube Shorts» (Publications settings, «Where it is published» → YouTube (Shorts)). If you already have publications with the old value, rename the option in Notion instead of creating another one, so they update by themselves.

Important

Do not use for a long video the same value the Shorts use: WorkOS would try to publish it as a Short. (The settings do not let you save two channels with the same value.)

Who can see it

It is a company channel: only people allowed to manage company content in Publications can see and create it.

Shorts: if you change the YouTube title of a Short that is already scheduled, the change is not sent to YouTube; do it before scheduling.
